23. Make a Holiday Time Capsule

I have shared several times about my brother and the time capsule project that his teacher had him do his senior year. If you haven’t heard me talk about his time capsule project, I’ll share that my brother and his classmates each created a time capsule that was to be opened ten years after they graduated from high school. In their time capsule, they placed the things from that time and their ten-year goals.

Needless to say, the whole family waited anxiously to see if what my brother wrote would come to pass in that time.

The holiday season is a good time to create a holiday time capsule. You can either do one with the things from today’s times, or you and your children can create a list of goals.

If you are not sure what to add to your time capsule, here are some suggestions on what to include:

  • Photos
  • Letters to future selves
  • A favorite ornament

Open it in 5 or 10 years. Then, you can see if your predictions came true. You can also see how things have changed from when you and your kiddos created it.

Here’s another one of my favorite cozy ideas that made my list of 25 creative ways to celebrate the holiday season…hot cocoa and a reading nook . I’ll be the first to admit that I am a cappuccino fanatic. But, for the kids, you will want to do leave coffee off the agenda. Instead of coffee, you can use a hot cocoa bar as the basis for a warm and cozy reading time with your children.

You can create a cozy reading nook if you want to really make this a fun holiday activity. Grab some soft throw pillows and your favorite seasonal scents. Add some twine or Christmas lights to give the area a more festive feel. Now, pick your favorite books and add them to your comfy reading nook. Grab the hot cocoa. Add some marshmallows…if you like. And, you are all set!
